Florida, like swing states Ohio, where Obama went last week, and New Hampshire, on his itinerary next week, has seen independent voters turn against the president after national unemployment hit 10 percent.

A Quinnipiac University poll last month found 49 percent of voters in Florida, ugg boots sale, hard hit by the mortgage foreclosure crisis, disapproved of Obama’s performance and only 45 percent approved.

In the 2008 election, victory in the key electoral state helped pave the way to the White House for Obama, and as recently as a year ago his approval ratings in the state stood at 64 percent in the same poll.

“I campaigned on the promise of change — change we can believe in, the slogan went,” Obama said, recalling the days before his barnstorming 2008 campaign promises hit a brick wall of Republican opposition in government.

“Jobs must be our number one focus in 2010,” Obama said, and promised to redirect 30 billion US dollars from a Wall Street bailout fund to help small businesses get credit and create new positions.

He also vowed he would not “walk away” from the stalled health care reform drive which dominated his first year in office.

In another bid to recapture the heady spirit of change which swept him to power, Obama said he would work with Congress to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law banning gays from serving openly in the US military.

The administration says its 787 billion US dollars stimulus plan has saved or created up two million jobs, but with unemployment at 10 percent and set to stay high for months, ghd hair straighteners, a political rebound may be a long time coming for Obama.

He turned towards foreign policy only towards the end of an address dominated by economic challenges, almost as an afterthought, warning Iran would face “growing consequences” if it did not halt its nuclear program.

He demanded Congress pass a jobs bill and send it to his desk “without delay,” and warned that if lawmakers did not maintain the strength of his bid to crack down on Wall Street he would veto their efforts.

STEPHEN COLLINSON January 29, 2010 - 7:54AM <BOD>

President Barack Obama headed to Florida Thursday, hoping to use his defiant State of the Union address as a springboard for political recovery in an economically scarred electoral battleground.

Obama was to make a rare joint campaign-style appearance with Vice President Joe Biden, to unveil eight billion US dollars in funding for high-speed rail projects, part of a jobs push which is now the White House’s top priority.

“That investment is how we can break ground across the country, putting people to work building high-speed rail lines, because there?s no reason why Europe or China should have the fastest trains when we can build them right here in America.”

“Right now, I know there are many Americans who aren’t sure if they still believe we can change — or at least that I can deliver it,” he said, and bluntly stated “change has not come fast enough.”

The administration had previously announced the eight billion dollar grant for high speed rail under the stimulus act, but will offer more details at a town hall meeting in Tampa, Florida.

The administration said the investment would create or save tens of thousands of jobs over time in areas like track-laying, manufacturing, planning and engineering, and rail maintenance and operations.

Obama’s agenda took a huge hit when Republicans seized a Senate seat in liberal Massachusetts last week, and the president is under intense pressure to show leadership and to restore his authority.

Obama said the US government must double US exports in five years to support two million more jobs, and to boost commerce with South Korea, Panama and Colombia, but stopped short of urging Congress to pass trade pacts.

The president, classic timberland boots, seeking to rescue his ambitious political program, vowed on Wednesday night in the key note address to Congress that he would not quit, and was determined to haul the American economy out of the mire.

“Through the Recovery Act, we are making the largest investment in infrastructure since the Interstate Highway System was created,” Obama said, in an advance copy of his remarks.

After Amazon experienced some difficulties last week with its selling options in the Amazon Marketplace, it made me wonder if anyone decided to start selling some of their merchandise on eBay. If so, they would join thousands of others who are using the online auction site to make a few extra bucks. If that’s your goal, check out some of these services for eBay sellers.

Vendio lets you create a store in no time.

Photoblat allows you to upload images in no time.

HammerTap is a useful tool, but beware that it costs $19.95 per month after a 10-day free trial.

3. ListingTicker: having the option of listing all your eBay auctions is quite convenient.

After you sign up for the site and choose a membership (it costs $24.95 per month or $197.95 per year), you can immediately start searching through the app’s listings of eBay products. When you find the product you’re looking to sell, it provides you with information on the item’s average bid, how much the average listing makes, and how page design affected profits. The app even provides you with information on which day is best to list the product and end your auction. It’s a powerful tool.

2. Vendio: Vendio has some offerings that should appeal to you.

ListingTicker ListingTicker is a simple tool that helps you post all your listings on your blog or Web site. The site asks you to input your eBay user ID. It then creates a widget to be placed on your site. It shows all your auctions that will be ending soon. It also provides your site’s visitors with a search box in case they want to find something else.

Auctiva Auctiva is a full-featured product that allows you to use a variety of templates and modules to help you sell products more effectively on eBay.

eBay tools

Toolhaus Toolhaus is a service that allows you to see the reliability of an eBay user. It lists all the feedback the user has received, including both positive and negative reviews. It’s not the most useful app in this roundup, since it basically lists information you’ll find on eBay, but it does come in handy when you want to quickly determine if you can trust users.

HammerTap HammerTap is another eBay market research tool that provides basic information, like the number of active item’s listings, how many times a product has sold, and the average sales price of those auctions. One of the app’s nicest features is its “will it sell?” offering, cheap ghd styler, which displays a scale, showing the percentage chance of the product selling on eBay.

eBay Market Researcher provides you with a variety of research tools.

Selling Manager eBay’s Selling Manager app is installed into the My eBay section of a seller’s listing page. The app allows you to manage all your listings in one place. You can also create customized e-mail templates to send to buyers who won your auction. If the buyer doesn’t pay,mbt masai shoes, it automatically relists your item. If you want all these options, you’ll be forced to pay $15.99 per month. The free version of the Web-based app will let you create a professional listing and edit your listings in bulk.

Photoblat Photoblat is a neat utility if you want to save some money on adding photos to your eBay listings. The site allows you to upload photos to the service. From there, you can add those photos to your eBay listings page through tools like eBay’s Blackthorne Pro. All the photos are hosted on the Photoblat site. Photoblat charges $3.99 per month for access to its service.

Vendio’s listing-creation tool lets you display images, set up promotions, and track all the items that were sold on eBay. The site also tracks customers, displaying their name, the last time they purchased products from you, when they bought those products, mbt sandals, and more. Vendio is free to use, but it takes up to 1.95 percent of your sales that are generated through the service.

My top 3

Toolhaus displays how users view you.

Auctiva is quite powerful. You can create side-scrolling galleries with pictures you upload to the site (you’re allowed 1GB of storage), change the color of your listing page, and issue invoices. It won’t help you determine if you’re selling products that eBay users want, but it will help you easily manage your auctions. Admittedly, Auctiva is for active sellers, but at $9.95 per month for so many nice features, it’s an affordable offering.

Book rights holders have until next Friday, September 4, to decide if they want to opt out of the proposed settlement and prevent their books from being displayed in Google Book Search. Open Book Alliance to oppose Google Book deal

With less than two weeks remaining until a key deadline in the Google Books settlement, Google’s opposition is circling the wagons.

The Open Book Alliance, ghd pure, a consortium that includes nonprofit author groups, library institutions, and Google rivals Amazon, Microsoft, and Yahoo, launched Wednesday to “insist that any mass book digitization and distribution effort be open and competitive.” As reported last week by the Wall Street Journal, the group will be led by Peter Brantley of Internet Archive and veteran antitrust lawyer Gary Reback of Carr & Ferrell.

That’s perhaps where Reback comes in. Reback was instrumental in the DOJ’s prosecution of Microsoft in the 1990s, and also attempted to argue an antitrust case by representing Peoplesoft against an eventually successful takeover bid from Oracle. He did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the Open Book Alliance.

Some object to the unchecked publishing power granted to a single corporation, some are concerned that rights holders are not getting a fair shake under the deal, and some just don’t like Google. On the other hand, there are some rights holders who are excited by the idea of gaining recognition and perhaps revenue for books long out of print.

The macro numbers are interesting, but the more intriguing stuff can be found in the micro picture. Within the notebook category, the two-year trend lines reveal how the major manufacturers have fared versus their competition. For example, in July 2007, Dell products or prices were viewed by 40 percent of all considered users on CNET, but that number dipped to 25 percent last summer and it has continued to sink in 2009 to less than 20 percent.

After notebooks, we’ll be collecting the data for the other key categories on CNET, particularly TVs and mobile phones, and coming up with novel ways to incorporate the information into the site. For example, we can see which phones are popular with people who live in your area.

Asus: According to IDC, Asus has risen from almost nothing a couple of years ago to 3.5 percent in the first quarter. CNET’s monthly numbers for the first three months show Asus running between 7 percent and 10 percent, and as of July it was up to 20 percent. (It’s my guess that CNET is a leading indicator when it comes to the popularity of Netbooks and that Asus will show a jump in IDC’s second-quarter numbers–perhaps not as dramatic as the 16 percent to 20 percent seen on CNET, but a nice gain nonetheless.)

CNET Editor in Chief Scott Ard has been a journalist for more than 20 years and an early tech adopter for even longer. Those two passions led him to editing one of the first tech sections for a daily newspaper in the mid 1990s, and to joining CNET part-time in 1996 and full-time a few years later.

As a result, we think you will find the CNET numbers to be another piece of the puzzle when trying to determine which notebook to buy. Just like a single product review, or user opinion, or even a friend’s recommendation, they aren’t the whole or the final answer. But they are useful for seeing in a very timely way which notebook manufacturers are getting most of the attention on our site and how they are faring each month. (CNET also produces lists of specific products that users are interested in, but this new data focuses on manufacturers to provide another view into the current market.)

What our data shows is that the number of considered users looking at notebooks climbed 31 percent from July 2007 to July 2008 and–despite Depression 2.0–the number of these users climbed another 25 percent in the past 12 months (sorry, the data guardians at CNET won’t let me publish the actual totals but I’m working on them). That’s healthy growth that could be the result of several factors. As the site editor, I’ll list the two I think are most plausible: our superb laptop editors, led by Dan Ackerman, are cranking out more reviews than ever before, and our SEO team has made sure their reviews rank extremely high on Google and other search engines. Even if people aren’t buying as much in this economy, they are certainly researching for when they are ready.

As a potential buyer or follower of the tech industry, please leave a comment below on the type of data you would find useful and how you would like to see that information presented on the site: in monthly blog posts, timberland classic boots, trend lines on the categories doors, or as part of our product-sorting tools?

Dell: IDC shows Dell peaking at nearly 28 percent during the last three months of 2007 and then steadily drifting down to 23 percent in the first quarter of this year. CNET shows Dell at about 30 percent in the final quarter of 2007 before sliding to between 24 percent and 26 percent during the first three months of 2009. Since then Dell has slid further to its current 19 percent.

For years, CNET has had you covered on all those points except the part about friends. Well, we’re aiming to change that.

Imagine that you’re looking for a new laptop and you ask your friends what they own, what their experience has been with that manufacturer, and whether they would buy the same machine again. Chances are the responses will be useful, to a point. It’s likely your friends have not purchased a notebook in a while, so they have little insight into the current crop. And their experience with breakage and customer service–whether it’s good or bad–is valid but anecdotal.

This is where CNET can help, if you’re willing to stretch your definition of “friend.” Each day, hundreds of thousands of like-minded people click around our sites doing research and deciding what to buy. If you could see what these people are viewing most often, wouldn’t you find that to be valuable information? It would be like walking into a Best Buy or Wal-Mart and seeing a throng of people gathered around one or two laptops on display. Of course you would join the pack to see what the buzz is about: is it a low price, hot new hardware, or both?

Of course, this data is only part of the picture, and one obvious question is how closely CNET’s numbers track actual sales figures. For those numbers I’ll turn to IDC, which issues quarterly shipments for the major notebook makers, and compare four notable names:

Who benefited from Dell’s tumble? Hewlett-Packard began at 24 percent in July 2007, slipped to 20 percent by the spring of 2008, and now sits at 30 percent, giving it the largest share of considered users of any notebook maker on CNET.

At CNET, we take great pride in the quality and thoroughness of our reviews. We know they play an important role in helping millions of consumers to determine which tech products to buy and which to shun.

The big winner has been Asus, which Ackerman calls “masters of the Netbook.” And right now, Netbooks are hot on CNET. After unveiling its first Eee PC in late 2007, Asus has climbed from 2 percent in July 2007 to 13 percent a year later to 20 percent in July 2009.

Apple tends to hover at about 10 percent, but its share can spike to 15 percent or 20 percent when new models are reviewed. Other manufacturers also see such spikes around new products, but they aren’t as pronounced. (See the above chart, which tracks the major manufacturers and calls out newly published product reviews that resulted in traffic spikes.)

As you can see, the trends observed by CNET and IDC are similar. The key difference is that CNET is tracking people while they research and shop, and IDC is following actual shipments. CNET is also compiling stats each month, versus quarterly for IDC. The two reports together are very complementary, but CNET is tracking the consideration phase, so we theoretically can spot trends before they manifest in actual sales, and sooner.

For now, our foray into this new area is modest–just this blog post and the above charts. In the near future, we will be injecting this data into the site in various ways. For example, the product-filtering tool on the notebook category door and elsewhere will show how certain manufacturers are trending on CNET (the manufacturer choice is the most commonly used filter in this tool, so we know readers are concerned about who is making their hardware).

Apple: IDC has Apple ranging from 7 percent to 11 percent for the past couple of years. CNET also shows Apple in a similar band, with the notable exception of some sharp monthly spikes around the publication of new product reviews (which typically occur within a day or two of a new notebook being released on the market).

But we’re also realists. We know that a CNET review is just one part of the research that goes into picking out a new phone, mbt usa, laptop, or TV–especially in this economy. The other sources you’re likely to turn to include other review sites, mbt shoes clearance, manufacturer information such as specs, reviews from other users, and advice from friends.

U.S. notebook shipments by manufacturer

The online equivalent to seeing what people are checking out in a store is CNET’s Business Intelligence group, which crunches a “Matrix”-worthy amount of data about activity across CNET’s many sites. Their reports are typically used by the sales team to demonstrate the power of the CNET brand and its influence on buyers. Now, however, we are taking the first steps to making that information available to you as one of the tools we provide to meet our core mission: connecting buyers and sellers.

CNET tracks what it calls “considered users,” defined as visitors who clicked on a product review, like this one of a new Sony Vaio, and/or on a pricing link on the review page or elsewhere on CNET. In industry parlance, the people reading product reviews, checking out specs, viewing a video, and so on, are described as being “up funnel” because they are thinking about buying something but are still in research mode. “Down funnel” users are those who have clicked on a pricing or merchant link, because they are that much closer to making a purchase. In either case, they are all “considered users” because they are considering a product.

HP: IDC shows HP hovering at around 25 percent for the past couple of years, with a jump to about 30 percent in the first quarter of 2009. CNET also shows HP tracking at around 25 percent until October of last year, when it topped 30 percent (where it has remained since).

On July 20,ugg australia boots, the joint venture said it had won a deal to build a wireless network in Canada for phone company Globalive Wireless. Nortel’s longstanding relationships with wireless carriers could help Nokia Siemens win larger deals for next-generation wireless networks, including those based on LTE. "They are interested in getting an installed base and relationships with carriers," says Ronald Gruia, a principal analyst at consultant Frost &amp, ghd iv mini styler; Sullivan.

If the bidding for Nortel’s wireless business reaches $800 million, it would indicate other units may fetch 40% of their annual sales as well—a richer proposition for Nortel’s creditors than the 30% Wall Street originally figured on. Some divisions could be worth even more. An $800 million wireless sale could also value all Nortel’s assets at $2.6 billion, vs. analysts’ initial estimates of $2 billion.

One bidder, private equity firm MatlinPatterson Global Advisers, has bid $725 million for the wireless assets and says it will participate in future auctions if it wins this one. Another, Nokia Siemens Networks, has bid $650 million, and may be willing to pay up to $800 million, according to Richard Windsor, an analyst with Nomura Securities. Nokia Siemens spokesman Ben Hunt says the company’s bid "represents the best long-term value for Nortel customers, employees, and other stakeholders."

On the morning of July 24, bidders will assemble at the offices of a New York law firm to compete for parts of bankrupt Nortel Networks’ wireless telephone equipment business.

Saving Jobs a Factor

For sale this month are Nortel businesses that produce equipment for wireless networks based on so-called Long-Term Evolution and Code Division Multiple Access technologies, used by carriers including Verizon Wireless to carry voice and data signals. Sales of CDMA gear are declining as carriers migrate to faster LTE and other next-generation infrastructure. But CDMA can be a cash cow, yielding profit margins as high as 20%, as it requires little research and development investment to maintain, says analyst Windsor.

It’s the first of several upcoming auctions of Nortel’s (NRTL.Q) businesses, and the winner,Discount North Face Shoes, likely determined by the end of July, will snare several networking technologies carriers use to transport data and phone calls. Depending on who wins, some buyers may stick around to compete for four other Nortel units up for sale.

The final determination about who gets Nortel’s wireless businesses won’t be based solely on the highest bid. Nortel will make a recommendation after the auction closes, likely on July 24, based on criteria including saving its workers’ jobs. On July 28, a judge at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware will decide on which bidder should get the assets. A similar hearing in Canada is scheduled for July 30.

Saab’s history as an automaker dates back to the 1940s, when the first cars were produced by the Swedish aircraft maker Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or SAAB. GM acquired Saab Automobile in 1990.

GM officials said the deal calls for Spyker to pay 74 million US dollars in cash and allow the US giant to retain redeemable preferred shares worth an estimated 326 million US dollars.

Under GM’s stewardship, spanning almost two decades, Saab rarely posted a profit and last year lost 3.0 billion kronor, the equivalent of 241 million euros, or 341 million US dollars at the time.

“Today’s announcement is great news for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, great news for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide and great news for GM,” said GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances John Smith.

General Motors announced a “binding agreement” to sell its Saab division to Dutch luxury sports car maker Spyker, classic ugg boots, giving an 11th-hour reprieve to the storied Swedish brand.

“It will not be an easy road to keep the tiny company going and growing in the intensely competitive world market.”

GM also agreed to sell some Saab assets to China’s Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co.

Up to an estimated 15,000 jobs were seen as at risk in a Saab shutdown, including those of suppliers and subcontractors. A Saab liquidation also could impact Sweden’s other carmaker Volvo, owned by US-based Ford Motor Co.

“While many around the globe, especially in Sweden, will be thrilled to see the quirky but much-loved Saab brand saved, the new owners have their work cut out for them,” said Michelle Krebs, analyst at the research firm Edmunds.com.

Sweden will guarantee a loan of 400 million euros (563 million US dollars) from the European Investment Bank to support the transaction, Swedish Enterprise Minister Maud Olofsson said in Stockholm.

As part of the agreement, Spyker will form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, which will carry the Saab nameplate forward and avert the planned liquidation of Saab.

In December, GM nixed a proposed deal with Spyker following the withdrawal of a bid from Swedish sportscar maker Koenigsegg Group AB with Chinese backing.

“Saab is an iconic brand that we are honored to shepherd. We are delighted to have secured the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of loyal Saab employees, suppliers and dealers and to have given reassurance to the 1.5 million Saab drivers and enthusiasts around the world.”

“We are very much looking forward to being part of the next chapter in Saab’s illustrious history,” said Spyker chief executive Victor Muller.

Assuming quick action, the transaction is expected to close in mid-February, according to GM,The North Face Footwear, which said that it would suspend its previously announced wind-down activities at Saab.

Saab employs some 3,400 people in Sweden and sold just over 93,000 cars worldwide in 2008.

“General Motors, Spyker Cars and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we’re all happy for the positive outcome.”

The announcement appears to end a series of on-again,timberland mens boots, off-again deals for the Swedish automaker, amid intense fears of job losses in the Scandinavian country.

GM has been undergoing a massive restructuring since emerging from bankruptcy with support from the US and Canadian governments last year. The company has decided to end its Saturn and Pontiac brands in the United States and has reached a deal to sell its Hummer brand to a Chinese buyer.

Spyker said the terms call for an installment of 50 million US dollars by the expected closing date of February 15 and 24 million to be paid on July 15.

Then there are new threats from Google and its many partners working on the Android operating system. Deutsche Telekom’s (DT) T-Mobile is already advertising a new Android phone, and Motorola (MOT) is expected to announce a new batch of phones running Android soon. As Needham’s Wolf put it: "I think in the fall season we’re going to see a lot of Android phones. It’s going to look like an Android invasion."

Subscriber additions and device sales were also in the low end of RIM’s forecasts. RIM sold 8.3 million new BlackBerry devices and added 3.8 million new subscribers, having forecast a range of 3.8 million to 4.1 million. It finished the quarter with approximately 32 million BlackBerry subscribers worldwide, up from 28.5 million a quarter ago.

In the previous quarter, sales also missed analysts’ projections. RIM said fiscal second-quarter sales were $3.53 billion, a 37% increase from a year earlier but less than the $3.62 billion forecast by analysts.

Even as the company sells more devices than in previous periods, its average selling prices are coming down as competitors release smartphones. In the current period, RIM expects the average selling price of a BlackBerry to slip to $320, compared with $345 in the second quarter and $357 in the first. On a conference call with investors and analysts, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie attributed the decline in part to the success of the BlackBerry 8520, a reduced-cost version of the BlackBerry that’s being sold at Wal-Mart (WMT). Balsillie said a new set of higher-priced devices will be introduced later this quarter. James Faucette, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, wrote in a recent research note: "We believe margin pressure could be further exacerbated by an increasingly competitive smartphone market."

RIM Results Raise Growth Fears

Financial results and forecasts released by Research In Motion (RIMM) on Sept. 24 raised investor concerns that growth for the maker of the BlackBerry may be reaching its peak.

The results included a one-time charge of $267 million, or 20&cent,Mens North Face Down Jacket; a share, as the result of the settlement of a patent lawsuit with Visto, a privately held wireless-messaging company based in Redwood City, ugg sale, Calif. Visto filed patent lawsuits against RIM in 2006. Included among Visto’s equity investors is NTP, a holding company that until a late 2005 settlement had threatened to bring RIM service in the U.S. to a halt amid a patent dispute.

New Threats from Android

Shares of RIM tumbled in extended trading after the results were released. The stock dropped 9.47, or 11%, to 73.59 after the announcement. During regular trading, the shares had fallen by 2.71—more than 3%—to 83.06.

RIM said it expects to sell 9.2 million to 9.9 million BlackBerry devices in the current quarter, indicating an increase of 37% to 47% from a year earlier, when RIM sold 6.7 million BlackBerrys. RIM also expects to add 4 million to 4.3 million subscribers.

That was the second straight quarter of missed financial forecasts, suggesting that RIM is under pressure from rivals, including Apple (AAPL), maker of the iPhone. Competition is likely to stiffen in coming quarters as handset makers release new smartphones, some equipped with Android, the operating system created by Google (GOOG) and other developers. "The company simply can’t grow as fast as it once did," says Charles Wolf, an analyst at Needham & Co.
